Did you put this in the function Before_Update for the form?

Putting it in the before_update changes the value to date just prior to the 
recorded being saved so the new value is saved in the table.  If you put it 
in the after_update it changes the value in the field on the form after the 
record is saved therefore it wasn't committed to the database just the form 
and at this point the form is either closing or moving to the next record.  
With the before update you won't see the new date on the form when you edit 
that record but the next time you edit that record it should show the last 
time it was edited.
