There is considerable question as to whether the Texas routes
make money, or whether any routes make money...perhaps the Northeast
Corridor and Los Angeles-San Diego.
There is a great misconception that if Amtrak takes in more
money--carries more passengers or whatever--they make more money. It
depends...quite often Amtrak loses more money if they carry more
passengers (and take in more money).
This is true in many businesses. Because you have more
business and take in more money you may not have more profit.
Gross receipts do not equate to net profit.
