subject: NEW FEATURES FOR ARJ

Hey Walter Scott! Welcome to the wonderful world of.. something! ;-DDDD
Magically, Walter Scott was transported on top of my head! Cursing back
at him, about NEW FEATURES FOR ARJ, I fainted and dreamed up this:
WS> The following was evoked by a message sent to All by Robert
 WS> Robert:
WS> The issue of extracting long filenames to a flavor of DOS that
WS> can't use them is one in which there probably is no perfect answer.
WS> Nevertheless, I have two imperfect suggestions. (1) Truncate the
WS> name to the first 8 characters and the extension to the first 3.
 WS> (i.e. AUTOMOTIVE.REPAIR would become AUTOMOTI.REP) Here, I'm
WS> assuming both filename and extension can be longer than they have
WS> been in DOS since I have not even seen Windows 95 in operation let
WS> alone learned the conventions for filenames in Windows 95. If
WS> extensions are still 3 characters long, then, obviously, truncating
WS> the name would only be necessary.
There is a bit of fault in that method. Let us say there are two files
we archived. One was "Automotive.Repair" and the other "Automotive.Repair2".
Then we have two files named AUTOMOTI.REP? No! MicroSoft came up with their
own way that should work for ARJ. The first file will be named AUTOMO~1.REP
and the other AUTOMO~2.REP and it will incriment the number after the ~ as
needed. And Robert could include an option that upon extraction of a LFN,
ARJ will create a 4DOS-Style DESCRIPT.ION file with the long name of the
file in it, and if it gets extracted again, the .ARJ will still contain
"Automotive.Repair". Just my 3k$. :)
