Correct. Roses are thirsty, but they don't like their feet wet. And
despite what you MAY have heard about growing Roses in Portland ,
much of the soil around here is heavy clay from volcanic ash. We have
plenty of rain about 9 months of the year, but probably have at least
as great a need for good drainage, if not more. Our Roses need regular
watering in summer.

Beware of buying potted roses. Many times the ones that suddenly
disappear from the stores around April or so are just taken back
and stuffed in a pot to be brought out again in June. Examine them
closely for damage from being pawed over the first time and stress
from being dried-out in the bare-root packs. When you buy a potted
rose in early summer, demand only the best looking, perfect plants.
