It's a holiday and I'm headed out, so my answers will be sketchy, but
here's what I'd do:

First choice, remove HD, set as slave with adaptor in a desktop Win PC that
can read NTFS5.  Piece of cake, if the HD is physically good (and
trojan-free).  Hint - some recent laptop HDs are cable-select only.  You'll
need a machine, a system drive and a ribbon cable that can do this.

Second choice: Bart's PE boot CD, a several-hours' project to create a
limited boot environment that reads NTFS, virus scans with a commandline
McAfee, file-management with a Norton Commander super-clone, etc.  Network
support is typically a big PITA unless your NIC is super-common.

Then there are the Ultimate Boot CD, the various one-CD Linux-en, etc.
