Of course you can, if you want to.  Init with ATZ~~AT+FAA=1 (you can't
store adaptive answer in NVRAM, 'cos ATZ sends AT+FAA=0 and turns it back
into a modem) then use the normal ATA answer string.  Doesn't really matter
though, either way will work, and your method is just as good as any.
