This almost sounds like you logged on as Knoppix User instead of
as root?
To be root your user name IS root.
Working as root all the time is dangerous as you can do most
anything including but not limited to clobbering the MBR
or recursively wiping out all the software.

Took me a couple weeks and a bit of assistance to get myself
a user account with modem and dialer access.
