Hello Steven. 21 Nov 02 00:58, you wrote to Janis Kracht: JK>> I think there's just no excuse for making an internet node Pvt JK>> when he or she is online and reachabe 24/7 just like a pots node. SH> But what do we do then? Use the "HOLD" kludge in FTS5000/1 or use the SH> "000-..." kludge in the telephone field? Or will "-Unpublished-" in SH> the telephone field compile if the "Pvt" flag is not used? If you use Hold, you're again putting two meanings on one flag, just as the Pvt kludge does; because a Hold system is supposed to be one in which all netmail is routed to it's host. Obviously, if a IP based system is 24/7, that situation is undesirable, and so again, IP mailers would be forced to ignore the proper use of a nodelist flag. -Unpublished- without Pvt, in my experience with SkyNet, will work well for the end nodes' nodelist compilers, but unfortunately it will cause MakeNL and other nodelist processors to barf, so until we get new nodelist processors that can handle it, it's also out. (Incidently, if we can get new nodelist processors to work with this, it /may/ be possible to list the FQDN in the phone number field, like so: -madmail.ods.org- or like -madmail-ods-org-. It would have to be tested, but if it worked, it would solve a lot of problems..) That leaves 000-*. While not the best possible kludge, it's the best option that we /currently/ have. It's already been used extensively for those with Static IP's, and has been proven to not cause any real trouble for others. in conjunction with the ,300, baud listing, it had been proven very effective in preventing POTS mailers from dialing IP based systems. The only need is for dynamic DNS systems to prevent other systems that may be looking for a static IP number in that field from attempting to connect to a wrong IP number, and 000-000-000-0000 (or 000-000-000-000-000) will do that nicely. --- GoldED/386 3.0.1-dam3* Origin: MikE'S MaDHousE: WelComE To ThE AsYluM!
