I had something like this happen to me when I tried to use RAS on one of my 
NT WKS. I don't think it has anything do do with being on a LAN or not as it 
happened on one of my LAN machines. Try going into your Network setup and 
totally remove remote access. Reboot and re-install it. Fixed it for me. 
Don't know why it crapped out on the original install. I -think- you will 
have to re-apply SP III and the post SP III fixes again as I think there were 
some RAS files that were upgraded in the SP's.
