PE> I see you managed to get your modem sorted out after what looks
PE> like a few goes. What was the trick? BFN. Paul.

The *PROBLEM* is that your modem is *FUCKED* when set to Adaptive Answer.

The *SOLUTION* was for me to get my modem to not issue NG tones when
making a V.34 call. FWIW, the NG tones are part of the V.34 spec.
However, *YOUR* *FUCKED* modem gets confused and tries to answer it
as a fax. My modem then says "fuck-off, I'm not connecting with that
heap of shit and the two of them sit there and argue about it.

The _undocumented_ way to get my modem to not issue NG tones and
therefore violate the V.34 specification is to place a caret after
the ATD command. I have changed the Modem Dial String in Telix so
that it now reads: ATD^^T

No doubt I'll have to change it again when you change modems.
Jeez, you've got no idea how happy I am that you don't fuck-around
with anything unless you have a complete, detailed understanding of
exactly what it is you are doing.
