I can't see why Avast would want AVG's engine so I'm guessing it is some
ancilliary technology they want to acquire. Or maybe they also acquire
the manpower so they can up the size of their resources, expertise, and
support teams. Maybe the prez of Avast married the CEO of AVG. There's
some backstory the public is not told.

"Avast is pursuing this acquisition to gain scale, technological depth
and geographical breadth"

Yep, all about increasing resources, not about acquiring technology from
the software. They also get to buy over all of AVG's customers to
enlarge a marketshare.

About a year ago, Avast has 21.4% of the antivirus market and AVG had
8.6%. Microsoft had a 19.4% share. Together Avast+AVG would have 30%
marketshare so they get a bigger piece of the market's revenue.

(did not find a new AV marketshare report but I didn't search much)
