JDBP>   Watcom C++ 10.0 :

JDBP> [*] OS/2 Developer's Toolkit [*] IDE
JDBP> [ ] PM Class libraries [*] Guidelines (*NOTE*)
JDBP> [*] Ships on CD-ROM (*ONLY*) [*] Workframe

JDBP> NOTES : Guidelines officially supports 9.5, but 10 should work.

JDBP> PRO : Highly portable (Windows, extended DOS, OS/2, Netware).
JDBP> Industrial strength optimiser. Has an IDE similar to Workframe.
JDBP> Develops for both 16 and 32 bit platforms (including 586). Able to
JDBP> generate applications for multiple platforms from a single platform
JDBP> with little or no source changes. Able to debug DOS and Windows
JDBP> applications within OS/2.

JDBP> CON : No PM class libraries. Non-standard linker. No SOM. Printed
JDBP> manuals are extra and almost double the price of the product.

Funny... On my Watcom 10 CD-ROM I have a SOM subdirectory which contains
the IBM SOM compiler and toolkits.

Best strike that from the CON's list :-)

Actually Watcom's PRO's list should be the same as IBM CSet++'s except
for the following:

WC isn't *the* standard for OS/2 because it's not from IBM
WC's support for thunking isn't as thorough as CSet++'s
WC doesn't have a PM Class library (but it does have MFC for MSWin:-)

It *does* have an industrial-strength optimiser (sometimes it's even
better than CSet++'s) and it does have 586 support (they had it *before*
IBM did).

I've used Borland BCOS2, IBM Cset++ and Watcom for heavy-duty
development work but now I've deleted all but the Watcom product from my
system as it serves *me* best. (Your mileage may differ).

Also note that you *can* buy Watcom 10 on floppies, it just costs more
(a growing trend with *large* packages, as is the trend towards making
printed documentation an optional extra).

Another PRO (for some) may be Watcom's ability to produce 32-bit
MS-Windows apps that will run under Win-OS/2. I know of no other
compiler that will do this. (I know that OS/2 purists will say "who
cares" but it's nice to be able to create 32-bit apps that will run on
*either* OS/2 or Windows).
