WXP doesn't do NETBEUI very well and is  not supported.

I'd assign IP addresses go try to share via that.

Is this PC XP Home? that has some muy weird properties when trying to share
files on it, so I'd try to share files from the NT4 box first.

If he doesn't have a little red x over the top of the network connection on
the XP machine, the cable is probably good...

It could also be that the XP box is set not to use Lanmanager
authentication, but I believe that's the default, so it should be that.
