subject: Combo WinNT Server & Workstation

GI> My scenario is that I will be linking 4 buildings with
 GI> 2.4GB radio links that
 GI> provide a CSMA 2MB ethernet connection. Buildings A &
 GI> B have 30-40 users and
GI> their own NT Servers. Buildings C & D have less than
 GI> 10 workstations (6 each
GI> at the moment) which would seem to make it cost effective to use WinNT
GI> Workstation as their local/primary servers.
GI> Part of my plan is to deal with the possibilty that there may be service
GI> interruptions with the radio links. Building A has the
 GI> PDC; Building B will
GI> be a BDC. Can C & D have local security via their NT Wks machine when
ot
GI> radio linked to Building A?
You can have local security as each NT system (Wks or Srv) can have it's own
user data base and that will work from within an NT Domain just fine. I do
know when I have my DC server down that NT 4.0wks caches the local user
profile. It doesn't cache the Domain User data base with users and pw's that
have been accessing the Wks resources. All you'd have to do is setup
the user names you want to access the Wks in the NT Wks user base and it will
work. That may or may not be a pain in the toot for you depending on how many
users need access to that server. For user convenience I used identical
passwords in each user Data base, it probably doesn't have to be that way.
What I am not sure about is the kind of interaction you would get if your
users change passwords on the DC and you still have old password on the Wks.
I -think- all that would happen would be that they would have to manually
type in the old password on the WKS NT system to have access. Be easy to
check that one out though.
As doc in back to the future said right before the model car caught fire.."It
_should_ work"....
