There were two items in that paragraph. There's more to 'abstractions' 
than just those that apply directly to the user's experience (like HAL 
for instance) and there's a feeling I have that Jax's question was from 
someone other than herself, perhaps from one of her techs trying to see 
if I knew what an abstraction was rather than her asking what an 
abstraction was because she didn't know.

So, "Explain what?" was to find out which part was being questioned.
