BA>One problem I have noted about such lanes is that they are generally only
BA>on one side of the road. If you ride a bike with traffic it is no problem,
BA>but against it can be. Here in the US, where we drive on the right side of
BA>the road, people are used to looking to the left when they make a right
BA>turn onto the main road, but no so used to looking to the right where an
BA>oncoming bicycle might be in that lane. I presume in areas where they
BA>drive on the left the opposite would be true.
Well, hhmmmmm you made me think now....we drive on the left side of the
road here in OZ, but basically the same rules apply: who comes from
the right has the right of way.....soooo has the bike coming from the
right in the bike lane right of way? Well one motorist this morning
waited for me to pass, me coming from the right, even so she could
have easily turned left in front of me....I try to make eye contact
with the driver whenever possible so I can guess his/her intentions.
This is one of the reasons I don't like to ride a racing bike on the
road, which has handle bars which force you to look down onto the road,
rather then ahead......look at the accident that happened at the
Tour de France, where riders ploughed into stupid spectators stepping
right into the road to take pictures......
Oh well...it's good to be able to talk about it....
happy riding...Bill:)
