Jerry Schwartz On (25 Jan 97) was overheard to say to Ann Marie Rivera
JS> Well, some people with AD(H)D have reported being hypersensitive to
JS> sounds and touch; my son doesn't seem to be.
Nor is mine...
JS> this now, but in the past he needed constant entertainment (which now
JS> includes reading, at least): if he didn't have anyone to play with, we
JS> had to be playing with him, taking him somewhere, etc. His needs were
JS> insatiable.
Do you really mean his "wants" were insatiable? We are still in that
phase but not as bad as it used to be... Quite by accident I
discovered that my son is _very_ interested in woodworking, he will
go to his room and watch the "New Yankee Workshop" on PBS whenever it
is on ... hey it's loads better than MTV!! He now has "his" tools
(all hand tools) and a stash of scrap lumber. I can never find an
unused screw or a nail when I really need one.. (-8 We just finished
a school project that he pretty much designed and built with minimal
help....had to incorporate 3 simple machines into one functional
"thing"...simple machines being screw, wheel/axle, ramp, lever,
pulley etc..it's basically made of wood. He actually drew a plan
before he picked up a tool.... now if this will HURRY UP and CARRY
OVER..!!
JS> He would complain to his therapist that we never did anything with
JS> him, which of course led to the therapist telling me that I was
JS> neglecting him. What the therapist could never grasp was that when my
JS> son said I never played with him, it meant I didn't CONSTANTLY play
JS> with him.
Been there..done that...told two therapists they needed to be in a
different line of work ... something where they didn't come into
contact with people...sheesh..
JS> Unfortunately, he probably sings, dances and tells funny stories in
JS> the middle of arithmetic lessons.
ROFLMAO....ain't it the truth!!
