Kit, I have been sitting in on this little tug-of-war that you have
been going back and forth with John over and I'm going to throw in my two
cents worth:
I have to support John, but my support has nothing to do with copyright
laws, and, unfortunately neither does your argument! You are using the
copyright laws to defend your position against *free enterprise*! I am NO
lawyer, outhouse or otherwise, but I do know that the copyright laws were
designed to protect an author/inventor/etc. from being cheated out of their
 of what they created.
When a car maker designs, developes, builds, and ships a car, that car
is either sold outright, or sold on consignment to a dealership. Either way
the dealership takes possesion of the car and then sells it for WHATEVER it
can get, that is whatever the market will bear. As long as the maker gets
the agreed price from the dealer all laws are honored. Any moneies received
by the dealer beyond his cost of the car is profit -- that's free
enterprise!
The same is true with anything that is sold to anyone. As long as the
terms of the sale are honored, then the law is fulfilled. Disney releases
the video at a cost per unit to distributers -- Disney gets what they asked
for each unit the the law is satisfied. The distributers sell the unit for
a price that is higher that what they paid, that is profit! There is
nothing to keep any one distributer from buying 100,000 tapes of a Disney
video from Disney and storing them in a warehouse until all other
distributors have sold all of their stock, then that distributer puts the
video out on their shelves and sells it for a higher price than ALL the
other distributers did. As long as the market is there, as long as the
buying public desires the video, they WILL PAY THE PRICE! It's called "the
law of supply and demand": the shorter the supply, the greater the demand,
the higher the price!
It is not your place to argue copyright infringement. If Disney is
worried about it THEY'LL DO IT! They won't. If they would, they would of
done so years ago, and not just with videos, but ALL of the Disney
collectables that are on the market.
So what this comes down to is that you don't want to pay the price that
John is asking for his legitimately acquired videos. Fine, go somewhere
else and try to find it at a cheaper price. You can't find it cheaper you
say? Well then, if you don't want to pay the price I guess that you don't
want that bad do you?!! SUPPLY AND DEMAND = FREE ENTERPRISE! That's part
of what America is all about!
