Hi Richard,
RG>A while back My friends and I were stopped by the police because we were
RG>riding our bikes on the road rather than on the bike lane.
RG>Parts of the bike lane went up and down sidewalks and those
I noticed the same here, some of the bike lanes are going up onto
the sidewalk, especially on roundabouts and other places where one
has to cross from one side to the other, and at some places,
there is a sign telling the bike rider to dismount and push the
bike across.....hahaha which of course nobody does...
RG>next to the road would gather debris. I'm not sure if
RG>you've ridden on lanes going up and down sidewalks, but if
RG>you are going at a good speed you can easily lose control
Basically them sort of rules, where put into place, when the
majority of bike riders where school children going to their
local school, and the odd eccentric old timer riding a bike
to collect empty alu drink cans from the around the local
parks and picnic areas....:)
Now things are a bit different, as biking is becoming more
and more popular. Now we have a real mish mash of bike
lanes and strange signs where to ride and where not, which
don't make much sense at all.
RG>of the bike. Well we tried to explain this to the officer
RG>to no avail. We were told either to use the bikelane on the
RG>sidewalk or get a ticket. I was wonder if they had the
RG>right to force a cyclist to use the bike path if the rider
RG>deemed them dangereous??
As far as the law goes there seems to be a lot of controversy
who has to ride, or drive where. Reading in the Cyclist, the
problem seems to be very complex still waiting to be sorted
out by the law makers....I hope, common sense prevailed in your
encounter with the officer of the law.....
Well, when I decided to seriously ride a certain number of kms
every day, with hills and speed stretches etc to get the old ticker
working.....:) I attempted seriously to do the right thing and
ride as I would drive a car, to the same rules etc....hahaha
I soon gave that away, because it was outright dangerous; other
drivers of cars, must have thought that I was a car on two wheels....
So I designed my circuit for my own safety, which ment: I ride up
one lane roads, ride on the wrong side of the road, go up bus lanes,
never go up onto sidewalks etc etc
I can do that, because where I live, Victoria Point, is a peninsula
and there is relatively speaking not very much traffic. Especially early
in the mornings, when I like to do my thing.....the main dangers are
joggers and other foot sloggers, which like to walk the whole with of
the bike lane forcing me into the road lane....Oh well, there is
enough room for all of us...I suppose....
...Happy biking...Bill:)
