  Since a dump of 4OS2.EXE reveals no such message in the executable, I
  suspect that it's not a 4OS2 message at all.

  Since "core dumped" is a UNIXy sort of message, I'd go looking for a
  UNIXy sort of tool as the culprit if I were you.
