I have yet to get going on that process,  though I'm a bit closer to it now
than I was,  this past week.

Different tools for different jobs.  I find GUIs appropriate for some
things, but not all that much.

Sure.  There are a lot of window managers out there,  some of which are
considerably less resource-intensive than either KDE or Gnome.
