DD>that pollination can be done to different buds on the same tree. Now
DD>pears, they need 2 trees.
CG>And that's why they are called pairs?(g!).
CG>OK. Does this just mean that pears have to be pollinated from a
  >different root system?
I can't say for sure, but when we bought pear trees, we were only going
to buy one. We were told that we needed to have 2 or no pears. We
bought at a nursery so I expect that they know their business. The
salesperson asked if we knew of a pear tree close to our home (we
didn't) and then the salesperson said that there would not
likely be a pear tree close to us if we could not see one or know of
one...therefore we should buy 2 trees. It would sound as though you
need the two different root systems.
