Hello there Bill ....
BG> Whether or not you believe that Oswald killed Kennedy, the
BG> Warren Commission proved beyond any doubt that it was possible for
BG> Oswald to chamber and fire three rounds in five seconds, ALL with
BG> extreme accuracy, from his prehistoric Mannlicher Carcano rifle.
BG> That can logically be extended to 36 aimed shots per minute, or 360
BG> shots in just 10 minutes. Deduct maybe 25% of that total for
And that is not allowing for the 50% misfires from these old beasts
either!! Not a rifle to rely on IME.
BG>
BL>> the .22. I wouldn't kill 35, but I'd go close to a dozen.
BL>> Someone would jumnp me while I was working the bolt on the old 303.
BG> Next time you visit the library, have a look at one of the
BG> ballistics manuals, compare the velocity and energy figures between
BG> a .22 and a 7.62mm, then come back and tell me that you'd still
BG> prefer the .22 for a mass slaughter.
Reminds me of when I was talking to a New York cop in the Police Club
here once (they were over on some exchange promo) and he was saying all
the cops pissed off their .38 pistols as, and I quote, "you can't stop a
6'4" nigger if he's doped up and violent, with a pop gun like a .38."
BG>> That actually varies with the terrain. In scrubby country
BG>> where visibility is somewhat limited (say 50m or less), a 12g pump
BG>> shotgun is the preferred choice (and is what I once specifically
^^^^^^^^^
And sanest IMO.
BG>> use on pigs), although the professionals out around St George and
BG>> Goondiwindi seem to prefer 7.62mm SLRs or the Ruger .44 magnums
BG>> (some prefer this calibre as they can use the same cartridges in
BG>> both their rifles and revolvers). It's definitely a regional thing
BG>> though.
Used to hunt them on foot with a mate with a .44 Magnum Winchester
lever. Bloody good punch out to ~100yards, then a rapid fall away.
BL>> I went shooting pigs at Mooree in swampy scrub like you said,
BL>> and the local publican used an old 303 (in the 60s)
BG> Probably because ex-WWII Lee-Enfield SLMEs were only a couple
BG> of quid each then, and ex-military ammo was dirt cheap too.
And as common as arseholes.
BL>> plus a 357 you could hardly lift, let alone fire.
BG> Might have been an old Webley, but they were generally .45
BG> calibre.
Unwieldy old cannons, too.
BL>> I stayed well out of it! I reckoned the shooters and their dogs
BL>> were more
BL>> dangerous than the pigs. No one had a shotgun, but they had
BL>> everything else. It was a funny weekend.
BG> Sounds hilarious. :)
Makes you wish you were there, doesn't it!! :-)
