From what,... their minds or a god?

Not "idiot", willfully ignorant perhaps, in desperate need of, but not
necessarily "idiot". One cannot put the label "idiot" on all
fundies,... that too would be an ignorant assumption.

Perhaps many of them do realize it, but quickly justify it for
themselves in order to fulfil a need for a god?

Gods have become very _personal_. I once thought that gods and religion
may no longer be needed in the far future, but that may not be very
accurate. With our existence being linear, it is impossible to tell -
until we get there. I also think there is a new age dawning, and
perhaps that age may consist of nature based religions becoming
prevalent, because the big issue at the top of our minds is how will our
planet (all living organisms) survive with all the damage we are
causing. Each new age is borne out of the old in some way, borne out of
the needs of the old. In short, "needs" dictate change.
