It's 27 Nov 97 08:39:00,
We'll return to Gregory Urban and John W Reed's
discussion of Offline Reader OS/2-DOS &
GU> I have also had great success under Warp with BlueWave (OS/2 native
GU> and MS-DOS) and Offline Express (for DOS). These are purely offline
GU> readers. "1st Reader" also works as a dialup terminal and one can
GU> write automated scripts for handling BBS messaging.
I'm pretty much a Bluewave fan myself. Both the DOS and OS/2 versions
work well under OS/2. :-)
GU> Currently I'm using "1st Reader" for handling mail, FIDO and Usenet
GU> conferences via a BBS. My home system is a 486DX2-80 running Warp 3
GU> Connect (Blue) and "1st Reader" works well either full-screen or in a
GU> window. There is a slight performance edge with "1st Reader" running
GU> full-screen.
I find full screen vs windowed performance depends a lot on the video
card. On my old Trident (ISA, 512k), text mode was the only way to fly,
as windowed was slow as a dog. On the current ET6000, either mode works
well. :-)
GU> had good sucess with "Offline Express" and BlueWave (both OS/2 native
GU> and DOS versions). My advice is to check them out and see which works
GU> best for you.
I think this is the best advice. I've basically settled on what I like
(Bluewave), though I try other offerings from time to time. :-)
FWIW, Bluewave has worked under every DOS and DOS emulation I've tried,
including:
DOS 6.x
Win 95
Win NT
OS/2 Warp
Win 3.x DOS window (really DOS 6 )
Linux with DOSEmu
Another thing I like about Bluewave (unfortunately DOS version only :(
), is that you can get a third party add in called PGPWave, which
integrates PGP (great for Internet!), and adds a few other nifty
features. It also features a similar interface to Bluewave itself. :-)
... Since no one else listens, I talk to myself.
