This is the third atempt at this Echo. I and the wife are New to the
Parrot world. We had a small one years ago, but as we have discovered
werent nothing like Having a Gray around to look after..... Any way
this bird was keep by a nice lady for the first five years of her life.
The Lady was having problems and needed to find a home for her Baby, She
wanted some one who would love and look after it and give it a good Home.
We are working hard toward this, but thought it would be nice if we could
inter-act with others who have and love birds. A little about myself my
name is Gene Shields and I severed twenty five years in the U.S. Navy. I
run the Nite Owl BBS as a hobby. I grew up in a little place called
Dover, Florida, My Wifes name is Alice and She grew up in a little Town
called California, Pa. We meet in Norfolk Va and were married thirty
years ago. At first Sleebee that our gray wanted little to do with me
other than to let her out of the cage and put her back in when she wanted
any loving and petting she received she wanted from the wife. I was home
last week and over the long weekend and now she will let me handle her any
way I wish with in reason of course, and she nips at the wife when she
tryes to pet her. Now the wife thinks she hates her, I have tould here no
that she just needs to work with me and Sleebee in the evenings and get
her used to being passed between us. Am I right or am I missing
something?

You don't say how long you have had your CAG. It will take a while for her
to adjust to a new environment and new owners. Don't be discouraged if
this does not happen immediately.
There are several sources of help if you are really having long-term
problems. 1) you can join the CAGTAG list. To do this, send email to
listserv@plearn.edu.pl with no subject line. In the body of your message
type SUBSCRIBE CAGTAG-L firstname lastname. This list includes a lot of
CAG owners and many breeders too. All are happy to offer help and
suggestions. 2) Get a copy of Bonnie Doane's book "My Parrot, My Friend".
This is a great book for anybody with a bird behavior question/problem. I
recommend it to all who buy my babies. (I breed cherryheads and CAGS.)
3) If problems are really severe, you can call a bird behaviorist: Sally
Blanchard is one of the better known. This tends to get a little expensive
if the problems are not easily solved. 4) Get a subscription to BirdTalk
magazine and as many other bird mags as you can afford. Blanchard's Pet
Bird Report is also a good one. BirdTalk is usually available at any pet
shop that carries birds or bird supplies, any good news stand and some
bookstore magazine racks.
To assist you in the short term: take the bird from the cage to a neutral
location (bathroom is usually good) Be SURE wings are clipped, but ask y
your avian vet or breeder how to clip CAG wings. It is different from
other birds. Work with the bird on the floor. Begin by talking to it, th
then touch gently. Gradually work up to easy commands, like UP and DOWN.
Keep workouts to no more that 15 minutes, several times a day.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Subj: PBS NATURE SHOW
JT>Hi Cherane,
JT> I caught a part of it a second time- it really was great, but way too
JT>short, as Fran remarked. We need a whole cable CHANNEL devoted to
JT>parrots. I think the Nature show would be a good thing to share with
JT>novice parrot owners, to give them an idea of the intelligence and need
JT>for mental stimulation of their baby parrot.
JT> TTYL, Jan
That is a great idea..I called Discovery sometime in December to
tell them (I thought) about this flick. Discovery was sooooo bent
out of shape with this idea. I'm delighted with Nature getting the
spot.
I could watch all day programs about Psittacines.
