| subject: | Newsgroup (NG) digests |
Hi! Richard, On 19 Apr 09 19:31, you wrote to me: PQ>> I'm about to start a batch programming project to split NG digests RW> sOunds doable. I've been playing with such an idea to RW> possibly automatically grab out ng posts to post in echomail or in my RW> local bases. I used to rely on a German feller (I think) who ran a service at www.news2mail.com, but the web server doesn't respond any more. The link 'pings' okay, so he may get it running again. His server used to dump reams of Apache error logs over the last few months, since the ISP/news distribution shake-up, so, I wasn't surprised when his service went belly-up. It was nice for a while getting one-for-one NG posts in email. Now I'm using Google Groups but they only distribute digests in email. :( RW> My problem right now is nettamer which I'm using to RW> retrieve them, although there are ways. MOre a problem with email RW> because of all the mime formatting, fools with html and the like . Yeah. I've been lucky in the past as I've been picking moderated (usually rules against mime-attaches or HTML) or source read-only newsgroups (NASA). PQ>> Has anyone tried this process yet? Or, anything similar perhaps? RW> I'm doing such a thing with some of the periodical RW> information i post in the ls_arrl echo, ham radio bulletins RW> and the like. I use a splitting function to split those RW> emails into parts. YOu could do the same with your digests. I like the way you think. ;-) RW> I'm using postit to post these to my squish bases as RW> echomail, but have used other autoposters. I usually use the one that came with FastEcho, mostly for daily logfile posts, but I do favour a doo-hickey called "Mpost" that has some unique features. I use it all the time for automated weekly nodelist FREQs to the RC13 (Mike Luko in New Jersey) and for auto-reply posts to my NCs when they submit their weekly nodelist segments. :-) RW> I'll post an example of what I'm doing to post amateur radio newsline RW> weekly when received as an email. IF this helps set you on the right RW> course let me know. Cool. RW> I go through my email with my usual reader, find the current version RW> of Amateur Radio NEwsline (R) which came in. I save it to a file RW> named newsline.txt which is then found by the batch when I exit my RW> mail reader. Okay. Mmm... I use a special email address and a Fido email handler called "Transnet" (which has its own Fido address) to do that sort of thing. (It currently does the NG digests but as I've said that method is limited by the JAM storage problem due to the length of the consoidated posts.) I don't see the posts till I browse my local echo. RW> From my mail reader batch: Time to pull out some munchies... RW> :newsline [ ...I understood about a fifth of that... ] RW> call postnews.bat RW> NOw we go into postnews where we find out how many pieces we have of RW> newsline.txt [ ...trimmed... ] RW> FInland's work as well to do this. LET's have a quick look see if RW> there are any other dependencies you'd need . Ahh, yes. I had a similar idea for mine; I had in mind to create an index of "From:" line numbers, and then run from that. Great minds... and all that. :) Nah, I figure the only =exotic= software I'll need is fgrep. My current toolbox of (mostly Horst's) utils will do nicely, besides. RW> HOpe that helps you out. Sure did. It means I'm on the right track. Thanks for your insights. Cheers, Paul. ...
