I would suggest staying as far away from most of the applets as possible.
For one thing, I think they will be gone from either the next OS/2 release
or the one right after, so you don't want to be too tied to them. For
another thing, they are usually pretty damn poor. For yet another, I
would be very surprised if they were designed to be accessed by or
interface with anything outside their own little "clique".
If the format is as simple as you describe, and there is no hidden
information for which you don't know the format (in .INI files, or
attached to the file in EAs) then you should be able to write a simply
REXX script to interface with the data files without any problem. REXX
has rather phenomenal parsing abilities and could certainly manipulate a
flat text file with '|' delimiters with no problems at all. If your only
need here is read-only access (i.e. massaging the data for _other_
programs to use) you will have no problems at all writing a little .CMD to
to the job. If you don't know REXX yet, it won't take long to learn it
well enough to do what you need. Concentrate on the PARSE command...
