I'd think it would be just about necessary to keep the 2 parts synchronized. 
A walking beam would do that function, but the parts would be too far apart.
I may be off-base, Alec. I've seen pictures of these things, but I can't say 
if I've ever seen a picture of the top and bottom of them. Dunno how else 
they'd work right offhand.
