Dear Wendy and Robin,
I am a frequent library patron, so i told my family that if anything
happened to me, they and my friends were to give a copy of their favorite
book [or the one that most influnced their livess] to their local lib
instead of buying flowers. My mom thought that was a good idea, so when
she died this is what we asked as memorials.
This is what happened: I sorted through her extensive lib and picked out
only the best condition, general usage books. I then took them down to the
local lib.. Several people donated money rather than books, which could
have been used to process the books. I costs the lib about $15 to enter a
book in its files plus preping the physical book. Some time later i was
notified that the books were about to be donated to a book sale because of
the cost of processing them. Somewhere, th money went into the lib general
funds and i went down and reclaimed the books.
This experience soured me on donating anything specific [they'll always
take money] to my lib.. If you do deside to donate books, be sure that they
will process them and put them on the sheles or you can go look 6 months
later and they will have disapeared down a black hole.
My lib does have a pretty good collection of craft books. Craft mags
though are few and far between. They also have an 'old' mag policy that
won't let you take any ond ones out of the lib. IOW the mags become
'reference material in about 3 months. The way most craft mags are
arranged , you would have to photostat several pages just to get one
project.
Shalom, ll
