Set means the whole shebang. Subset means less than the whole shebang,
but with nothing extraneous added.

Would you know what to do with the source code, debug version, and
compressed version if you had them? Neither would most people,
particularly without the accompanying instructions. Serenity packs up
what they know ordinary mortals need, and leaves out the padding. That
saves download time, besides overall confusion, notwithstanding yours
(at least that's why I think they do what they do).

No, you use the one that came with 1.1. Upgrading is an option, not a
requirement, and you have choices in that regard, either to get what
Serenity offers, or look through Hobbes or elsewhere.

And what would that mean? DaniS506.ADD in the file DANI506.ZIP from
Serenity's web and FTP sites is 61,912 bytes. DaniS506.ADD on the eCS
1.1 #1 CD is 63,464 bytes. OTOH, nothing contained in the DANI167.ZIP
file I downloaded is 42,122 bytes.

One they think you have use for. You probably need a more conspicuous
link to http://hobbes.NMSU.edu/cgi-bin/h-browse?dir=/pub/os2 in your
bookmarks, or to put it right on your desktop.
