subject: NetBEUI no longer supported on WinXP?

From: Randall Parker

I'm trying to walk my 84 year old father over the phone into getting his new WinXP
machine and his old NT machine to see each other with Network Neighborhood so we can
move over his email stuff. Well, this is not easy.

If an NT box and a WXP box can't see each other in Network Neighborhood what is the
most likely cause?

I recall the last time I've wrestled with WinXP and file sharing (I usually have NT
and Win2k in front of me) I had to delete some damned bridge. ("has
anyone seen the
bridge?") Can the 1394 protocol stuff be getting the way? I had him
disable it. He
sees no bridge.

The two machines are connected via twisted pair. Maybe I should assign an IP address
to the new box and have them ping each other to verify the crossover cable is working
properly? He sees green lights when he plugs in the cables.

This page says NetBEUI is no longer supported. Could it be that somehow the NT and XP
boxes are trying to do network neighborhood in different ways?

I need some more ideas to try short of flying a few thousand miles to Florida...
