I'll try another tack....

Many millenia ago man communicated with grunts. Then came the rudimentary
spoken language. To communicate over time he drew little pictagrams (which
could be pointed to and "understood" by the next person who came
that way (or received the tablet)).

Then they invented the written word and communication beyond the first
person leapt many fold.

Today we seem to have descended back to pointing at little pictagrams (and
grunting).....
