It's certainly out-of-spec, that's for sure. I don't think it's a
particularly serious issue though; I can't see most current software
failing because of this.
As for being silly... FWIW, I think it's simply trying to perform
"domain matching" from the MSGID, which isn't the idea of the
FTS-9 spec at all. The uppercased serialno looks like just a programming
quirk - I've seen other programs do this, eg. MacWoof (this is from
memory).
