  The prohibition on writing to a running EXE is nothing to do with
  LANs.  It's to do with the way that OS/2 demand loads the code of a
  running application from its EXE.  In order that everything remains
  consistent whilst the application is running, OS/2 requires that the
  contents of the EXE file do not change.  Hence it holds the executable
  open in deny write mode.

  UNIX does the same thing, for the same reason.
