a NATIONWIDE echo!

the

First, you have to determine what it is for. Hunting? If
hunting, what are you going to hunt? Give a range of animals,
because black bear needs a larger caliber than javelina. But you
*could* shoot a javelina or prairie dog or woodchuck with a bear
gun.
Do you want a plinking rifle just to have fun shooting? A target
rifle? A survival rifle? Something for home defense if there is
a riot?
Are you enamored of semi-auto? Or do you want a bolt action?
What's your budget? You can get a nice "fun" rifle like the
Russian SKS in 7.62x39 caliber for about $99. You can get a
good .22 semi-auto for a little more.
You can get a military surplus Lee Enfield in .303 British for
about $99.
Low end American-made center-fire bolt actions like the Savage
brand can be had for about $350 plus optics. Higher quality
American-made bolt actions like the Remington 700 or the
Winchester 70 go in the $500 to $700 range.
Even if you want an "all around" rifle, you have to place limits
on what you are going to do with it. .308 Winchester (7.62 Nato)
is a good "all-around" caliber, but it's too small for Elk,
Moose, Grizzly, and probably too small for black bear too. .308
Winchester would be good for all sizes of deer, and for wild hogs
that are not too big. But a .308 might be too big to plink with,
and ammo is much more expensive than say 7.62x39 and .22 rimfire.
And it is too big for rabbits, or other small game where you want
to save the meat or the pelt.
So tell us either what it is you want the rifle for, or else give
a price range. Then people will give their recommendations that
either fit your desires, or fit your budget, or both.
