subject: BIG Pumpkins!

Anyone here that back yard veggie gardens? I have for years and along
with my daughter since she was 3 have always enjoyed growing
the family pumpkins for Halloween. But the last three years our
success has declined greatly and we don't know why. Some say the
weather caused the BEE populations to decline and not allowing enough
to be around to pollinate the plants. Also we always wanted to grow
the giant varieties and have tried a few but with no real success.
Is there a type that grows best in the Northeast or do we have to do
something different to the plants while growing them? I am of course
talking about the Jack-o-Lantern type not the type commonly used for
pie making. Any advice would be helpful as it will soon be time to
once again start planting and digging in our little patch of dirt.
Carrots; This is another veggie that has given me trouble too!
Again we tried different types and I even added sand to my soil
to make it softer for them to grow in and not alot of success.
Our growing seasons have been strange here for the last 5 years with some
rainy periods and some drought type conditions. I try to water when needed
but let nature handle it most of the time as she does a better job.Oh yes
one other important thing I DO NOT USE CHEMICALS! in our garden I think we
are exposed to too much of that as it is.
