subject: null modem cable

MV>is there a difference between a null modem cable and a
MV>serial (female-female) cable ? i'm trying to link two PCs
MV>together for basic file xfers.
RA> Yes; the data transmit & receive lines are switched on the null-
RA> modem cable, and the appropriate hardware signalling lines are
RA> as well. (A's transmit is connected to B's receive, and so on.)
RA> To link two computers by their serial ports, you must use a
RA> null-modem cable. Both ports should also be set to the same
RA> speed, and data format (19200 baud, 8N1, for example). I've
RA> done this myself many times, among several different types of
RA> computer, including CP/M, Macintosh, and IBM. It works well.
ok. so my current problem right now is that i've bought a $14 2m
serial-serial cable, and its totally useless because you're saying that i
need to switch the rcv and xt wires on them which'll probably requre some
nifty soldering...
fuck!
