Is this like the preset electric shifter such as was on a
Cord my uncle had (this was a long time ago, of course, while Cords
were still in production).
There was a control that stuck out from the steering
column where you set the gear you wanted to shift to next. Then
when you pressed the "clutch" pedal it shifted automatically to
that gear with no further action needed.
