Almost all non linear editors are using Jpeg compression. The flyer does
not. It is the only system using the VTASK compression method which means
you can compress and decompress a a frame a gazzilion times and the quality
will be the same. Jpeg systems do not have this luxury. Each time
something is decompressed and then recompressed, you are going to get some
form of loss. This is why the Flyer is getting such rave reviews.
The problem I have with NEWTEK is this d-2 quality issue

When I was looking at the flyer (0.9 beta version) it only had one
compression ratio. You couldn't adjust it to SVHS quality or betacam
quality. It was written to the HD in D2 quality. This is a waste of HD
space for those people that don't have access to that type of equipment. I
am told that the 4.0 version which should just about be ready for release
will have adjustable settings.

They haven't come out with a Mac version. The PC and SGI versions should
be out sometime in March if Newtek keeps to their original schedule. I
heard about them wanting to port over before the whole commodore situation.
Why keep such a good program stuck on a platform with a small user base. I
think enough shows now are using lightwave that Newtek can make a good dent
in 3d Studio's market once released. I plan on getting the PC version and
a PC once everything is released. I will probably wait for the 2nd version
to come out, expecting major bugs to arise in the first release on a new
platform.
