Yoo Hoo, Jennifer!
JS>BM> "Journey Through Inner Space" was my wife's favorite ride. Not
JS>BM> because she thought it was good, just the opposite: it was so
JS>BM> dumb we could smooch without missing anything worthwile.
JS>BM> I think "Inner Space" thus represents a class of attraction the
JS>BM> Parks need a few more of: romatic rides.
JS> Ah, read _Mouse Tales_ and you'll find that being a "romantic ride"

I'm not sure that was the *only* reason it was replaced, but there are a
number of interesting stories that I *can* confirm about that
attraction:
The ride originally had large plate glass screens onto which images were
projected. These quickly became targets for spitwads. Any dangling
snowflakes that were within even a very long arm's reach of the
Atomobiles also got manhandled to the point the ride was too frequently
down for cleaning and repairs. This was obviously an unacceptable
situation.
The result was the development of a concept now universally applied to
attraction design, "The Envelope of Protection", which mandated a
minimum distance between guest and prop or set. While Guest Relations
may want to put the opposite spin on the term, it really does refer to
"protection" for the attraction.
As you might guess from my previous post on infrared cameras, I have had
some extended conversations with a couple of members (and former
members) of DL security staff. They have suggested that there is
probably no attraction (two-by-two seating or not) that has not seen
occasional hormonal behavior. While "Adventure Through Inner Space" is a
prime candidate, my contacts have confirmed sightings on the "Haunted
Mansion", "Peter Pan", the "Skyway", and even one on the "Matterhorn"
(with injuries).
I still believe that the real reason for the demise of "Inner Space" is
the same as for the "Hall of Chemistry" that preceeded it--it was
basically a very stupid ride.
BTW, could you post a more complete reference for _Mouse Tales_? It
sounds like a title I need on my Disney Reference Shelf. (Yes, I
actually have a shelf now--my wife got embarrased by posts mentioning my
Disney Reference Pile-On-The-Floor.)
