I take the boiled linseed oil and mix it about 50-50 with pure gum
turpintine. Rub it on the wood with an old rag. Let it sit over-night. Get
a piece of felt and rub it down. Repeat the process until you are tired of
doing it. You will get a diminishing return on your efforts as you go. i
did a walnut stock on a home made piece for an SM-100 a few years ago and
did the same thing to my CR-94 stock that did not have a lot of finish from
the factory. No one commented on my wood working skills which weren't that
great , but lots of people liked the finish on the stock. It's vey
non-critical. You really have to work at it to mess it up. Putting a hard
urethane finish on a gun without a lot of preperation is much more
difficult in my estimation. A little dust, a minor error in application
with the varnish and you can start over. If you try this oil method you
will find that after the second or third coat that it takes very little of
the finish to wet down the stock. Make sure it's dry before you buff it
with the felt. You can put 2 or three coats on now and next winter put a
couple more right over the top and see the patina get smootherand deeper. A
found this to be a very relaxing way to finish a piece of wood and very
satisfying when you stop.
