It (or Grub) goes in the /boot of Linux, which unless you create a
separate /boot partition, is a directory in the / (root) of Linux. So,
being in the "root" may or may not be technically correct, since a
separate /boot partition doesn't become part of / via mounting until
after the kernel is loaded, before / is mounted.
When I partition, nearly always I create /boot on /dev/xda5, swap on
/dev/xda6, / on /dev/xda7, and F: (normal OS/2 boot) on /dev/xda10, and
start the Linux loader from IBM BM on /dev/xda2.
