The filename is simply the last node of the path and filename combination. As such, the punctuation marks that delineate the components are not permitted in filenames themselves. Thus ':', '/', '\' and the C/C++ string terminator NUL are the only characters that are surely forbidden in filenames; for the full path, though, they are essential. (But the discussion was on filenames.)
