JH>I have this old classic car in my garage. I need to get it to where it JH>will crank, so I can sell it and we can move to Alabama. JH>It is a 1996 or so Cadillac Seville Elegante - - fun to drive but JH>guzzles the gas. Has been sitting since about 1992, when I realized JH>that re-do of the leather upholstery was gonna cost more than the car JH>was worth at the time. JH>Battery in it died, and I now have a new one to install. JH>I've heard various advice about what to do before trying to crank it up JH> - one said to pour about 1/2 pint of atf into the throttle body and JH> then let her rip. Another said to take all the plugs out, one at a JH> time, and spray WD-40 or so down in there before trying to turn it over JH> with the new battery. First, WD40 is NOT a lubricant. Far better to mix some 20W oil with kerosene (so as to make the oil flow better) or such and spray it into the plug holes. Transmission fluid is NOT a good combustion fluid. I would use the oil/kerosene mixture, crank the engine over to distribute it, let it sit for a while so the mixture could seep into as many as possible places (for lubrication to prevent scouring) then use a starting fluid to try to get the engine started ASAP and then let it idle a few minutes. This method would reduce unnecessary wear to a minimum.
