JH> JH>I've heard various advice about what to do before trying to crank it up
JH> JH> - one said to pour about 1/2 pint of atf into the throttle body and
JH> JH> then let her rip. Another said to take all the plugs out, one at a
JH> JH> time, and spray WD-40 or so down in there before trying to turn it over
JH> JH> with the new battery.

JH> JE> First, WD40 is NOT a lubricant. Far better to mix some 20W oil with
JH> JE> kerosene (so as to make the oil flow better) or such and spray it into
JH> JE> the plug holes.

JH>What proportions of SAE20 to kerosene do you recommend? 50/50?
JH>And how to spray it down in there, thru the plug holes??
JH>Hmm. I do think I have a small spray can of 3in1 oil here with the
JH>little red tube, so that would be easy to spray down in there.

I do not think the ratio is very important as long as the resultant
fluid flows rather easily so as to get into as much of the possible
areas of friction.

JH> JE> Transmission fluid is NOT a good combustion fluid.

JH>Agreed, and I think the ether type starting fluid will be needed when I
JH>finally do try to get it to fire up.

JH> JE> I would use the oil/kerosene mixture, crank the engine over to
JH> JE> distribute it, let it sit for a while so the mixture could seep into as
JH> JE> many as possible places (for lubrication to prevent scouring) then use
JH> JE> a starting fluid to try to get the engine started ASAP and then let it
JH> JE> idle a few minutes. This method would reduce unnecessary wear to a
JH> JE> minimum.

JH>I expect it will idle very rough - - battery died, and that so-called
JH>computer has by now forgotten all it ever knew about how the car should
JH>be running.

I forget the year, but computers in cars of 10+ years ago didn't
remember too much anyhow and after restarting and running a few times
had the memory restored.
