Well I don't have any more XP so I've not tested this service pack, but
I've never had a service pack fail to install a patch because the registry
entry for the patch existed, I have had WU fail to install one because of
that. I believe it just checks to see what components you have installed
not which patches and then installs all the patches for those components.

In fact, if you manually deleted MSMessenger files, SP2 reinstalls them..
or so someone posted on one of the mail lists I'm on.
