CF> It is not unusual for tiel's to show a preference for mates. First
CF> make sure your lutino is a female, if that is a for sure, you can
CF> either pair her with the male, and let them have time to bond, and see
CF> if they will for that matter, or get her a different mate. Your hens
CF> should be a min. of a year for breeding and males can be slightly
CF> younger. I had a male that did a wonderful job with a proven hen when
CF> he was 8 months old, but most will need to be a year. If this is the
CF> first time you have bred these pairs, they may not do well with the
CF> first and possibly even the second clutch, and you need to be aware of
CF> this, usually by the time the birds are re-set up after a rest from the
CF> first two clutches they will do a good job on the third.
 PN> Hello Cindy.
PN> To begin with my male is a proven breeder but unforunately all
PN> three eggs were unfertile. It was with another hen, she died shortly
PN> after I took the bad eggs and nest box out of their cage. She was on the
PN> plump side so she was a little unsure on her feet. So that's how come I
PN> had to get him a another hen. My grey was/is too young to mate. So I
PN> thought I would get a luthino she has faint little white lines on her
PN> tail on bottom. But I guess that since the hen grey was already her
PN> when his first mate died and he knew that she was gone for good he
PN> became attached to the grey. Because when the first hen was alive he
PN> would pay no attention the younger hen which he is with now.I hope I am
PN> not confusing you.But I bought the luthino hen they lady I got her from
PN> said that she was a proven breeder? The thing is how do I go about
PN> finding her a cock that she will like. Will I have to find a pet store
PN> that will let me exchange them until I find one that she will like. We
PN> plan on moving within the next two months so there is no way that I
PN> will plan on even trying to breed any of my birds. It probably won't
PN> even be tried until the end of this coming summer so my youngest hen
PN> should be over a year old then. And I am sure that my male will teach
PN> her anything that she needs help with. He was and still is a protective
PN> little thing. And when Spike (my Youngest hen) isn't around him in the
PN> cage he gets very loud. But as soon as she gets in the cage he is happy
PN> as can be.And thank you for answering my post. Even though I have gone
PN> to the library and done all kinds of research and bought all kinds
PN> bird books. I am still finding new things out all the time. Like the
PN> bald spot on the back of a luthino by the crest is hereditery.sp Well I
PN> really would like to continue to talk to you about these lovely little
PN> creatures. And I agree with you about not caring if they are hybrid or
PN> mixed. They are still unique for themselves not their breed. Their
PN> hybrid status doesn't have a thing to do with how smart they are.Well
 PN> thats enough for me.ttyl
Always something new to learn, thats what makes it so challenging. From
the events you described, it sounds as if time will be the best solution.
I know that when I have set up a male with say a certain hen, that when
I want to re pair him with a different hen, say I did not get what I wanted
in the clutch with hen number one, they are quite aggressive with one
another, particularly the male, who resents being taken away from hen
number one to be put with hen number two. Your male sounds like he did
not want to be paired with your lutino hen and visa versa, your hen may
have been proven, but resented loosing her mate. And there is always the
possibility that you were lied to.
Soo many factors to consider. Maybe since you are going to be moving
anyway, you might seperate all your birds from each other, that way
once you are settled you can try to pair these two again, and maybe they
will be more receptive. Let me know how it goes, and where are you moving.
