This morning's Baltimore Sun reports that longtime radio broadcast voice
Jon Miller is indeed leaving the Orioles because owner Peter Angelos wants
a lead broadcaster that "bleeds orange and black".  Ugh.
Here is the exact quote from Angelos, as reported in the paper:  "You have
the detached observer, but thats the role of the journalist.  I don't think
that's the status of the team broadcaster.  They should be an advocate for
the team.  They've got to bleed a little bit for the Orioles.  [Miller] has
got to approach the task with a little bit of bias, not that he should
diminish the opposition, but he's part of the team.  I'm for the Orioles,
I'm for Baltimore, because I'm part of the team.  I'm not suggesting that
Jon falls short technically, because he's one of the best in the business.
But there's a certain detached air, and that's fine, but mix in a little
orange and black."
It was also reported that Angelos had not even had  had a conversation with
Miller since he bought the team.  Also Miller said he intends to make
Baltimore his home no matter what team he ends up with.  The Giants (his
boyhood team), Padres and even Satanbrenner's Evil Empire seem to be the
leading bidders for Miller's services.
Peter (as if Angelos actually reads any of this crap), you're turning into
the worst aspects of George Satanbrenner, Charlie Finley, and (dare I say
it) Robert Irsay.  This could be the first step towards your alienating a
whole group of Oriole fans.  Had you owned the team years ago instead of
Jerry Hoffberger, you probably would have shown Chuck Thompson the gate.
I'm getting highly negative vibes here.  God, I wish you would have kept
Lucchino here to run the team.  This is getting scary.
