Methyl Hydrate.  Used as a fuel for some lamps, lanterns,
heaters, blow torches.

It's a thinner for shellac, and for cleaning
brushes used on shellac.

You can almost certainly find it in a hardware store
or paint store.  It's quite inexpensive bought in
reasonably large bottles - one or two quart sizes.
